Blessed are the Peacemakers | Day 25 Freedom Season Devotional

Scripture: Matthew 5:9
"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God." (NASB)

In Noah Webster’s 1828 dictionary, he defines the word “blessed” like this:

Happy; prosperous in worldly affairs; enjoying spiritual happiness and the favor of God

Who wouldn’t want that? Jesus said that this is the reward of those who are peacemakers. When we learn to carry God's peace, we receive the children's blessings as His sons and daughters.

So, how does one become a peacemaker? Like anything else, it starts in our thoughts, then is expressed in our words and actions.

Thoughts of Peace
I believe that peace first starts with an internal submission to the will of God. When we wrestle with God regarding His plans for our own lives, it creates an internal conflict that carries over into the atmosphere around us. A heart that is submissive to God and fully trusts Him is a heart that is at peace. Submitting our thought life to Him is the first step.

Words of Peace
Second, we declare peace into a situation with our words. Jesus demonstrated this when He spoke to the storm with the words, “Peace. Be still.” (Mark 4:39) We are told in Proverbs 18:21 that life and death are in the power of the tongue. Our words carry weight. When we speak even the simple word, “Peace.” into a situation, with the authority of faith and the peace of God behind it, that alone can cause the atmosphere to begin to shift.

Actions of Peace
Thirdly, we can look for ways to facilitate reconciliation and unity. Whether trying to restore unity between yourself and someone or seeking to help others find common ground, being a peacemaker is a mark of spiritual maturity and strength. We cannot always get others to come to the table, but we should always do our part to facilitate peace wherever we can. Paul said in Romans 12:18, “If possible, so far as it depends on you, be at peace with all people.”

As believers, we’re called to bring reconciliation and calm in a divided world.

Reflection: What situation in your life or around you is in desperate need of peace? How can you be a part of the solution? Where can you be a peacemaker today?

Prayer: Jesus, help me bring peace where there is tension. Give me Your heart in the midst of conflict and put Your words in my mouth to bring peace into the room. Make me a carrier of Your peace. Make me a bridge, not a barrier. Amen.
