Scripture: Nehemiah 4:6
"So we rebuilt the wall till all of it reached half its height, for the people worked with all their heart."
Whenever we see a community devastated by a natural disaster - earthquake, tornado, flood, fire - one of the first things you hear people start saying is, “We will rebuild.” There is a tenacity in the human spirit that creates a desire to restore what was destroyed to its former glory - or make it even better.
As Nehemiah led the mission to rebuild the wall around Jerusalem, each family was assigned to rebuild the portion of the wall in front of their own house. Everyone did their part with diligence and excellence and the job was done quickly and efficiently. But they all had to be working from the same blueprint, so to speak. Everyone had to use the same materials in the same way for there to be consistency in the structure and stability of the wall. They had to operate independently but in unity.
We find ourselves in a unique place in history right now. In the body of Christ, there is a longing in many to set aside the current western church template and return to a more organic New Testament model as laid out in Acts. There is also a call to restore God’s original design and intent for close and intimate relationship with His people in a “coming home to Eden” sense.
At the same time, as a nation, there is a growing desire to restore the original republic with its inherent liberties and a casting away of the faux-freedom and real bondages we have been living under since 1871. (NOTE: If this is new terminology for you, research the United States of America Corporation and the difference between that and the original United States of America as a sovereign nation).
Using the story in Nehemiah as an example, when God’s people unite with a shared vision, great things happen. The rebuilding of a nation - spiritually and morally - requires everyone doing their part.
Reflection: What role has God given you in rebuilding or strengthening your community or sphere of influence?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, show me Your heart for my sphere of influence. Whether it is a small circle or a larger one, help me to use the unique gifts You have placed in me to do my part in building and establishing Your kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. My life belongs to You. Use it as You will. Amen.
