Created to Be Free | Day 8 Freedom Season Devotional

Scripture: Galatians 5:1
“Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage.” (NASB)

God’s design is for freedom - spiritually, emotionally, and relationally. Before the disobedient decision to eat from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, life in the garden was one of true liberty. Man was free to steward all of creation and to enjoy the benefits of that stewardship. 

But freedom is fragile if we do not stand firm in truth. When the serpent deceived Eve into questioning God’s instructions and His intentions, liberty began to teeter on the precipice of ceasing to exist in its truest form. Then once she and Adam took the plunge into sin, bondage entered in and took over. 

We must choose to walk in truth. Daily we are bombarded with outright  lies and subtle innuendos that would lead us deeper into deception and bondage. Every step down their path of lies is a step further away from truth and liberty. 

Tomas Paine said, “It is impossible to conquer a nation determined to be free!”

Our drift into passivity must be reversed, and this can only happen by the determination of We the People and by the grace of God Himself. May we learn once again to walk in our God-given liberty.

Reflection: Where have you been tempted to return to bondage? What lies do you see in your everyday life trying to distract you from the truth? How can you intentionally turn away from the lies and return to the truth that sets you free?

Prayer: Father, help me to stand firm in the freedom You’ve given me. Set my heart on truth. Teach me how to help guide others into Your truth that sets us free. Amen.
