Faith That Overcomes | Day 20 Freedom Season Devotional

Faith That Overcomes | Day 20 Freedom Season Devotional

Scripture: 1 John 5:4
For whoever has been born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world: our faith. (NASB)

Faith is a tangible non-tangible. On the one hand, it is intangible because you cannot see, taste, smell or feel it. On the other hand, we are told in Hebrews 11:1 that faith is the certainty (substance) of things hoped for, the evidence (proof) of things not seen. By this definition, faith is very real and very tangible.

Throughout scripture, we see God’s people letting faith guide their decisions and their actions. Abraham, Noah, Moses, Daniel, Ruth, Mary, Joseph and so many others all stepped out into unknown territory because of their faith in the One who was leading them.

Faith has its roots in trust. Trust is the fruit of knowing someone intimately enough to be confident that they are trustworthy. We know that we can trust the heart of our Father because of three things:

  • He has proven Himself faithful time and time again in His word.

  • He is the same yesterday, today and forever, so He never changes.

  • He is no respecter of persons, so He doesn’t play favorites among His children.

Our faith is not just personal - it’s powerful. It connects us to the victory of Christ, who has overcome the world. In fact, 1 John 5:4 says that our faith IS the victory that has already overcome the world. It’s already done! Our faith in the finished word of the cross of Jesus Christ makes us born of God. And those born of God overcome the world through faith, which is our victory. Rejoice! You’re an overcomer!

Reflection: What is something in your life you've been struggling to overcome? How can you apply this message to that area to gain victory in it?

Prayer: Father, increase my faith today. Thank You for the victory I have in You. Remind me today that I can trust You completely in all things and exercise my faith by obeying Your direction, even when I don’t fully understand where we are headed. I know that You will guide me into what is best for me. I trust You. Amen.
