No Greater Love | Day 1 Freedom Season Devotional
Share
Welcome to the Freedom Season Devotional Series, a journey of faith celebrating liberty from Memorial Day through July 4. Each daily devotional centers on a scripture reference, includes a brief thought to meditate on and a reflection/application, and closes with a prayer. Let's get started.
Scripture: John 15:13
Greater love has no one than this, that a person will lay down his life for his friends. (NASB)
As we begin this journey on Memorial Day, we pause to remember those who laid down their lives for our country. Their courage echoes the ultimate sacrifice of Christ, who gave His life for our eternal freedom. Memorial Day is not just a time for picnics and parades, but a solemn reminder that freedom is never free.
In Exodus 12:14, when God was giving instructions to Israel regarding the Passover, He told them that they were to celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread from generation to generation. "Now this day shall be a memorial to you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to the Lord; throughout your generations you are to celebrate it as [q]a permanent ordinance." A permanent ordinance means simply to carry on this tradition from now on - in perpetuity, Those words, "in perpetuity" also appear in our founding documents.
There is much to reflect on as we remember and honor those who have laid down their lives for the cause of liberty. And the parallels between what we celebrate today and the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross are hard to miss. It is with hearts of thanksgiving that we acknowledge the significance of both.
Reflection: Who can you honor or remember today for their sacrifice?
Prayer: Father, thank You for those who gave their lives for our freedom. Help me to live in a way that honors their legacy and reflects Your love.
