Scripture: Isaiah 53:5
"But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed." (NKJV)
Jesus paid the ultimate price for our spiritual freedom. His gave His life so that we could have eternal life. This type of sacrificial love is mirrored in the way that many generations of Americans have laid down their lives to make a way for future generations to enjoy liberty.
Our founding fathers and mothers stepped out from under the reign of a tyrannical king for the pursuit of liberty. The signers of the Declaration of Independence pledged their lives, fortunes and sacred honor for the sake of freedom. From the Revolutionary War through two World Wars and a Civil War to modern day battles and conflicts, the cost of freedom has been paid with the blood of soldiers, sailors, pilots and marines who understood that freedom is never free.
The blood of Jesus bought our freedom from the bondage of sin and death. Our freedom came at a cost we don't have to pay because He paid it for us. Hallelujah!
Reflection: How does understanding the sacrifice of Jesus at the cross shape your gratitude for freedom?
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for Your wounds that bring healing, forgiveness, deliverance and true liberty. Help me never to take freedom—spiritual or national—for granted. Keep me ever-mindful of the price You paid and that others have on my behalf. Amen.
